8 as a *very* bare minimum (I once started Xfree 3.3.6 with a window manager, an
xterm and a few remote apps like mozilla  and stuff), 16 if you want to run X 4
(I presume you want that), and with 32 you can go pretty far with desktop themes
and backgrounds and stuff. 16 should be sufficient, in some case your box will
swap but hey, who cares :-)

I can 't really think about anything that will cost more ram then a fancy
desktop, unless unless fonts that are held by the server. I'd say figure it out
for yourself, find some way to run 'top' locally on a box wit 8 or 16 megs and
see how much it swaps.
