Thank you.  Your suggestion worked for me.  The CRTScreen option forces 
XFree86 to search through individual VESA modes.  However, for this to 
work, the projector should be plugged in and on before starting X.  In 
addition, there is a loss of image quality (slight flickering) on the LCD.  
However, this works and I am very happy.

I have posted a short web page concerning the use of the HP Pavilion 
ZT1290 with Redhat Linux 7.3.  I will add this to the page.  For those of
