There is a better solution for what you want in current XFree CVS code.

In old X4.2 radeon driver (as in RH73), the CRTScreen option will force the
driver to use the same VESA mode for both of your projector and LCD. Since a
lot LCDs do not work well with the standard VESA modes, this is probably why
you're seeing flickering on your LCD (you are lucky here for just seeing
flickering).

In the new code, CRTScreen option has been removed. Instead, the driver will
bring up both of your projector and LCD individually with their own CRTC
parameters. Also, there will be some options to let you pre-configure your
projector so that you don't have to plug in your projector before X starts.

Just want to add, using CRTScreen option with X4.2 radeon driver could be
bad to your LCD if you didn't configure it correctly or you were unlucky.
