Did you take the mandrake source rpm and optimized it for an athlon or did you get the plain (Linus) kernel source?
Pulled the source from kernel.org (mirror actually), using make xconfig, there is a 'processor family' option which I set to Athlon/Duron/K7.
I'm asking because I'm having a lot of kernel freezes with mdk 9.0 and they're not X related (I think sound but I'm not sure).
Mine were usually when playing tuxracer, although I had a couple of lock ups when I was doing some video capture stuff.

What version kernel did you build? Did you stay with the 2.4.19 or something else? Sounds like you might have found the solution though. I am using the 2.4.19 Athlon enhanced kernel and have not experienced any problems. My mobo is the ECS KS75A and Athlon 1700+ with a Radeon graphics card.
