I use plastic for the most part, as well. I had some cardboard bobbins, but I
am weeding them out of circulation as I come to them, because I like the
plastic much better. When you use a color a lot (like black or white) the
cardboard doesn't even last one skein's worth.
I found a different reason to like the fact that plastic is washable. Around
Christmas, the attaching clamp for the portable dishwasher popped a gasket in
the kitchen. This caused a fountain of dirty water to go up into the air,
through the pass-through and down directly into my floss box!!! Fortunately,
I found it happening before more than the first drawer got soaked. I had to
replace a ton of fiber, to be sure, but at least I didn't have to replace
50-odd cardboard bobbins...the half-dozen or so still left in that drawer were
trashed, of course. So plastic survives the occasional unfortunate accident
better as well. <g>
I used the preprinted labels people have talked about, btw. I found them at a
needlework fair, but I think Nordic Needle's catalog lists them as well. Much
easier (and less messy!) than marking pens (even the "waterproof" marker lost
out in the deluge! I had three bobbins that I'd marked before I found the
labels, and they all ran).
Another plus...if you are using plastic, you can peel and reposition the
labels a few times and still have them stick. They adhere to cardboard a wee
bit *too* well...as I have now found out. :(

vacation!)
