I cut the loop at the ends, so all are whatever length pieces.  Once
done, I twist (fairly tightly) and bring the cut end about 1 inch
higher than the folded edge.  I let it twist together (like regular
caron skeins twist) then insert the cut end into to folded end, to
hold it all in place (sometimes I give the folded end and extra twist
if it seems loose).
