I see from a previous post that
uname -a
should give kernel 3.13.0-74-generic #118-Ubuntu, but I have noticed that my
Xubuntu is only at 3.10.0 #387:
user@RIKOMAGIC:~$ uname -a
Linux RIKOMAGIC 3.10.0 #387 SMP PREEMPT Fri Sep 19 09:34:47 CST 2014 armv7l
armv7l armv7l GNU/Linux
user@RIKOMAGIC:~$

Kernel updates also got stuck for a while on my main desktop computer, and I
got them working again by
el_gallo_azul@W2600CR-850Pro:~$ sudo apt-get install linux-generic-lts-trusty

Do I need to do that for Xubuntu now as well?
sudo apt-get update
and
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

aren't doing anything, and I am told that "The software on this computer is up
to date". Greg Flint

Hi,

Just tried to dual boot windows 10 and Xubuntu on HP Pavillion 15
laptop. So I'm a bit behind the times - there's a new bios system,
something called UEFI and this laptop along with Windows 10 seems to do
everything to prevent being extensible and more useful by preventing a
dual boot. Tried everything I could to make it work.

So it's goodbye to Windows forever on this laptop - it's going to be ALL
Xubuntu !

Lee, I would not give up just yet if you need Windows. (I keep it for s couple
of applications that will not run under Linux.)

If you don't see an answer forthcoming on this list, search a bit, e.g., try
googling

uefi dual boot ubuntu windows 10.

If you are down to just a few tasks needed with Windows,
Virtualization is the way to go.  It's quite a relief when Windows
becomes an application!

I agree, to a point: the performances of Photoshop is significantly better when
not used in a VM. I use Pshop for talks that can not be done with The GIMP. My
surmise is that not all capabilities of video boards are unavailable. And, USB
devices are sometimes flakey. This with virtual box.

Now I dual boot from an SSD. Xubuntu and Win-7 are ready for use in 15 sec.
after POST. The SSD doesn't need to be huge of one puts /home on a second,
conventional hard drive (HD)  less costly than an SSD. Backups of data are to a
third HD. Win updates also ruin much faster, once past the download step, with
the OS on an SSD.

I noticed an update today and I didn't get it.  It appears that my last
update was in December.  I am running 140.04 LTS, I think.
I just installed it on a new drive a couple o f weeks ago.

Following is the results of uname:

john@sentry35:~$ uname -a
Linux sentry35 3.13.0-74-generic #118-Ubuntu SMP Thu Dec 17 22:52:02 UTC
2015 i686 i686 i686 GNU/Linux
john@sentry35:~$

What should I do?

John

Can you try running "sudo apt-get update ; sudo apt-get dist-upgrade" (sans
quotes), put the output in a pastebin (it can be rather long) and link it
here? sometimes if it's a minor error, the update manager won't display it,
such as if there's a package that's being held back for whatever reason
(this is something that's worse in Fedora, dnf often won't give the reason
certain packages are held back until you try and upgrade the one that's the
issue and only with certain flags)
