John, 14.04 and other LTS versions in general do NOT upgrade the kernel from the original installation. For instance, here is my uname results on one of my 14.04 Xubuntu systems (which is also fully up-to-date): $ uname -a Linux Hygd 3.13.0-74-generic #118-Ubuntu SMP Thu Dec 17 22:52:10 UTC 2015 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux On my 15.10 system, the kernel is 4.2.something. To get a newer kernel while staying with 14.04, download, boot, and then do a fresh install of the latest 14.04.# (currently 14.04.3) install image at http://xubuntu.org/getxubuntu/#lts. Or, follow the instructions occasionally posted at http://ubuntuhandbook.org/ when a new kernel becomes available for installation. Keep in mind that a mistake with a manual kernel upgrade can leave your system unbootable. take care, Victor -- Victor Forberger [email protected] blog: http://linuxatty.wordpress.com
