I think you may just have solved a problem for me too. I install a lot of Ubuntu-based systems, and I have often found that my USB stick simply wouldn't boot any further than the splash screen. Maybe the 3.0 ports are the problem (although I could swear that a couple of the older machines simply didn't have USB 3.0 but I can check).
