I added nomodeset to the boot option and got the following:

You can see how it is repeating the desktop view multiple times - there are
also multiple mouse cursors.

This laptop is a 2 in 1 so I guess xubuntu isn't liking that.  I'll try a
different window manager or distribution and see how I go.  Unfortunate, I
use xubuntu for everything else!
