Ken, The ATi and the RadeonHD driver variances ** DO NOT ** provide 3D on the 7x series cards your talking about ! The *only* way to get this on Linux *only*, not BSD, is to use the ATi binary driver.
Only the r100-r500 have 3D. Think 'hello world' is about all you get with r600+ cards in regards to 3D.
