Have you tried removing/renaming /usr/X11/lib/modules/libvbe.so ?
A bug introduced in build 35 causes some machines to lock up with
that module in place - so far it had only been seen on Ferrari 4000
laptops with Radeon x700 graphics, but yours may also be affected.
