That fixed it.  Thanks!  I guess I should have spotted that in "bugs"
somewhere, somehow...

It also seems to apply to my "white box" Intel D945GCZ + ATI Radeon
x600 PCI-express (all-in-wonder).

I renamed the offending lib, and ran kdmconfig. Per the instructions
that kdmconfig generates when Xorg is selected:

I ran Xorg -configure , moved /xorg.conf.new to /usr/X11/xorg.conf,
rebooted, and Bob's your uncle.  The ChipID trick is no longer necessary
for the x600.  It seems to work fine with an unmodified xorg.conf - so I
could probably have skipped generating xorg.conf and left it for auto
generation.
