Well said Julian.

Many issues have been installing and upgrading Office. If you actually
follow the direction and do not run any applications that remove languages
etc, you should be OK. (They have fixed that in SP2, but I still suggest not
using applications like Monolingual. Just don't install them in the first
place rather than stripping later)

You should quit all applications before installing a major application like
Office and Adobe applications. Any application that is open can be modified
causing problems. Easy way. Log out of your User. When you log in, hold down
the Shift key to disable all startup items.

Now this is where the tricky part comes in. To launch the MAU AutoUpdater,
you need to know where it's hidden or launch any Office application and
select it under Help in the Menu bar. I suggest doing this before you log
out and select to "keep in Dock". If you quit the application, you must be
sure you've quit the Microsoft Database daemon that's invisible and MyDay so
again I suggest the log out/in with shift key down.

After installing the updater, RESTART.
Download and install the next updater. RESTART

Verfy that you are fully updated by checking this file:

"/Applications/Microsoft Office
2008/Office/MicrosoftComponentPlugin.framework"

There are only two updaters needed for those that have the original DVDs.

12.1.0 and 12.2.3.

Those that purchased recently have the DVD that comes with 12.1.0 so you
only need the 12.2.3 updater.

If you have an Exchange account and meet the requirements, you can upgrade
to the EWS version 13.0.3 after you install Entourage 2008 and update to
12.2.3.

The other big gotcha is if you have upgraded to Snow Leopard is to remove
the older version Microsoft fonts. Fonts to delete after installing Snow
Leopard (includes help deleting font caches)

If you have a problem, ask for help.
