Hi Karen,

Welcome to the list and thanks for sharing.

Entourage¹s Database Utility progress window is often less than accurate and
you often don¹t know if it¹s still working or just quit.

Easy way to monitor is to open the Activity Monitor in
Applications/Utilities. Type Microsoft in the search box while you are
rebuilding and you¹ll see the Microsoft Database daemon. When this is at 0.0
CPU the Database Utility is quit. Not to say it¹s successfully rebuilt, but
the application quit.

Last night I did a rebuild that took approx 3 hrs. Said it was successfully
rebuilt, but when I opened the Identity it said to rebuild. I ran again and
this time the Identity opened. Even though it was ³successfully² rebuilt
each time, I ran further tests and found there was still corruption. Under
File > Export select the default option to export all items as Entourage
archive (.rge) file. If this exports successfully, you can use this file to
create a new Identity. If it fails and gives you an error about item(s) not
exporting, you need to run the export as MBOX script. This script fails on a
folder with corruption. Then the hard work of manually finding the
corruption begins.

Export folders as MBOX files (includes subfolders)

The .rge file doesn¹t get everything, but there are way to get everything
but accounts. See this link:

How to manually move your data. (when import fails and/or you need to move
to a new Identity same version or revert to an older version)

In summary, I don¹t trust a rebuilt database. They often fail again within
days or weeks. Moving into a new Identity is the safest option. Backups are
essential. See this link for several options to backup your data.

Using Time Machine to backup Entourage basics:

It¹s advised by the developers not to let Time Machine backup your Entourage
database. If the database is copied while being used, the backup could be
corrupt. You can set the Time Machine to exclude the Microsoft User Data
folder and create an iCal event to copy it over at night while not in use so
you get one backup daily in Time Machine.
