Thank you ED for all three posts of yours. Then perhaps it is fair to
say, "meaning of spiritual differs slightly from one to the other"??
Perhaps another version then: 'Spirit' is that without specific
meaning/that which allows giving of meaning.
Thus 'spirituality' is the study/practice of giving and taking nothing -
beyond the study and practice itself. Sounds kind of "Zen' put that
way.... Sounds more Buddhist if expressed as a vow to save the
non-existent 'sentient beings'...
Some might say ch'an/zen is the spirit of Buddhism. The essence (that
which has been noted, predates Buddhism). This reflects the form of
their study/practice, nothing else (See above and below).
What does the forum think?
Presently, this:
"This, is not my understanding."
By which (so as not to be misread or seem to be disagreeing with anyone
or having some differing understanding) I mean "Whatever this reality
is, it is simply this, not my conceptual understanding thereof, yet such
understanding is also an aspect of this."
This being far too cumbersome - I keep to the abbreviated version. It's
a simple reminder. Whenever mind gets up to it's tricks of this and
that, this simple reflection reminds that such reflections are all empty
(the diamond cutter - non-attachment to all dharmas). I greet all
thoughts & beliefs in the spirit of Hakuin's "Is that so?" which with
honesty leads to/springs from (no beginning or end) Seung Sahn's "Don't
Know', 'Don't know mind', 'Beginner's mind', 'Original mind' etc. - the
openness JM spoke to before.
It is almost pointless to call this reflection thinking, as infinitely
less effort is required to see.
