Kris,
An unusual fact in the life of my Ch'an teacher Sheng Yen is that he was a monk
even while he was a Captain in the Taiwan Army.
There are several biographies, but the most complete in English is: FOOTPRINTS
IN THE SNOW, 2008, Doubleday.
What's my prize for finding a/the counter-example? ;-}>
