Bill,
Yes, Bill, give or take a thousand million years.
This is Astrophysics: what's a billion years among friends? ;-)
Better red than dead! Oh, wait.
At Red Giant stage, the Sun will slowly expand to such a large size that the
Sun's atmosphere will engulf the Earth, and the Earth will, atom by atom,
become a part of ...the Sun's atmosphere. ;-)
Humans will probably have made a move before then, and taken a shipload or
Ark-load of Zebras, Hawks, Mice, Owls, Cats and Dogs, Ants, etc., to other
shores. Provided that any of those, and Humans, survive the 21st Century
species die-offs. If only Humans survive and win the Die-Off Play-Offs, Humans
lose, along with those other species. Things don't look good for the many
species, and maybe for Humans.
But where there's a Will, there's a way. Some say, where there's a will,
there's a won't. So, I dunno.
I think that, where there's a Will, there's a roomful of greedy heirs vying for
cash.
Somebody's published a non-fiction (?) popular-level-general-readership book
about how the Earth MAY evolve if Humans are expunged: THE WORLD WITHOUT US. I
forget the author. The book is several years old, now.
