thanks joe...so when you say intellectuals have the hardest time in
zen..please explain!..merle

Merle,

Well, I miss the old man. He taught us well his art, and he lived to be 98
years old (1902-2000). A remarkable life in many ways, not least of which was
in its longevity.

So, the example is his example; I just connect it to intellectual intelligence
and Zen practice, where it is not only useless, it is a definite, PESTIFEROUS
hindrance to one's own awakening, ...and to staying awake.

My Ch'an teacher Sheng Yen always said that intellectuals have the hardest time
with / in Zen practice.  He spoke from his own experience as an intellectual;
and, from teaching thousands of students, including me.

May old Sheng Yen and Da Liu both rest in peace.

Looks like it's up to just us, now.
