Merle,

The problem (IMO) is that your are exciting your mind too much.  You don't need 
to "understand through my mind", you need to quiet your mind, your thoughts - 
like quieting down the waves on the ocean.  Reading very seldom accomplishes 
that.  Talking very seldom accomplishes that.  And certainly THINKING (to 
understand) will not accomplish that.

Again, IMO, you need to QUIT THINKING and either start DOING something that 
will absorb your focus entirely.  For me that is zazen.  For you it's probably 
painting, or even canning marmalade.

But it's certainly not going to be READING!
