Bill!, I opine it's too much of a good thing, really, but a *BOOK* exists on "Mu".
It is: James Ishmael Ford, THE BOOK OF MU: ESSENTIAL WRITINGS ON ZEN'S MOST IMPORTANT KOAN; 2011; Wisdom Publications, Boston. There are some 30 articles contributed by about as many Zen teachers -- historical and modern -- and there is a Foreword by John Tarrant. Maezumi's teisho on Mu is included, as is my teacher Sheng Yen's talk on Wu. There is an article each by Maezumi's heirs, Chozen Bays and Daido Loori. The editor, James Ishmael Ford, is a Zen teacher in John Tarrant's line, who (Tarrant) broke off from Aitken's Diamond Sangha; Ford is also a Unitarian Universalist minister. I've sat sesshin in Tucson when John Tarrant and Joan Sutherland were co-teachers, and James was Tanto, and I was John's Jisha. I've gotten to know James, and I know that his practice is very solid. Tarrant has lately made James a Teacher in the California Zen Institute. At Amazon, you can see the Contents of THE BOOK OF MU: http://www.amazon.com/The-Book-Mu-Essential-Important/dp/0861716434/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1352737085&sr=8-1&keywords=book+of+mu My late teacher Patrick Hawk Roshi was invited by James to contribute to the book, but I do not see an article there by him (and I have had the book for 18 months!). To me, it was a sad surprise when I received the book and found no article by Pat. Then, I realized that Pat's was the greatest contribution of all! Pat was still living at the time, and I sent him a "Thank-You" card acknowledging my gratitude, and joy. Taken at once, the book is too much! But it is good to have the words and hearts of all those teachers close by when we want to visit, or want a visitation. I recommend the book for that! --Joe > The koan Mu is no difference then all 'breakthrough' koans. A skilled > teacher can use it to lead you to discover/uncover Buddha Nature. That's all > I care to say about it here. ------------------------------------ Current Book Discussion: any Zen book that you recently have read or are reading! Talk about it today!Yahoo!
