Merle,

I hope I don't live according to principles. Does a Buddha? No. Does a
Bodhisattva? No. They live according to Prajnaparamita.

I am a recreational target-archer, BTW. Maybe it goes with Zen practice, I
don't know.

If you have more than a 4-chambered heart, I'd like to ask what kind of
mutation that is, and does it cause problems?

Shall we get back to the Sutra now?

Sutra of Hui Neng is v. important in the Zen tradition, maybe the most
important. The account involves several of our people very directly --
centrally -- in the text, chief among them the Fifth and Sixth Ancestors of
Ch'an (Zen). It is great reading, and I recommend it even if you have read it
before (it's good to be familiar with the founders and pillars and history of
our/the tradition).

Diamond Sutra and Heart Sutra are "OK" too. ;-) But not as engaging, let's
say, and we don't get to know figures personally as we do with Hui Neng and his
predecessor. I do not value one more than another, however. But the Sutra of
Hui Neng feels very home-y.

This sense or response might be what is called "having a karmic affinity". But
let's not focus on that.

The Sutra of Hui Neng is also sometimes known as the Sutra of the Sixth
Patriarch; or, the Sutra of Eno. "Eno" is the Japanese transliteration of "Hui
Neng". Note that Hui Neng is pronounced like
"HWAY-nung", and "Eno" is pronounced like "AY-no", ...where "Ay" is pronounced
like "hay", except with a silent "h".

Best good-morning greetings from deep in the warming desert,

--Joe
