Hello AC,
This is off topic for this list, but the Lighthouse sheltered workshops like
the one you describe are left over from a by gone era. In the past blind
people were herded into sheltered workshops because they didn't have any
other opportunities and they were never taught or were expected to be self
sufficient. It was just assumed that blind people needed to be taken care
of. These sheltered workshops pay their 'clients' 25% minimum wage. Now
these facilities might be OK for people with multiple disabilities like
blindness and retardation, but they are not appropriate for people who are
only blind.
Blind kids are taught in the public school environment with their sighted
peers. With the use of Braille and adaptive technology like screen readers
for computers, blind kids can do as much as other kids. They are going on
to college and working in the 'regular world' far away from sheltered
workshops. They are living alone, getting married and raising kids of their
own. They are even climbing mountains in Tibet when not teaching fifth
grade in a Colorado elementary school. By the way, Erik Weihenmeyer has
written an excellent book titled TO TOUCH THE TOP OF THE WORLD. I highly
recommend it.
Welcome to the 21st Century!

Where I live there is something called Lighthouse for the Blind, where blind
people work, and some of them live there because they either have no other
relatives or they like the facilities better.
My original remark was pointing out that this particular place is run by the
Catholic Church. The Blind people who live & work there get paid for their
work. I merely pointed out that I have not heard of Buddhists like Dolly
Lama running any similar facilities, schools, vocational training centers,
etc.
