Dear Rod, What action isn'tr something extra? How about securing a meal so you can surive another day. Getting just what you need is not something extra. The problem with PJ's exercise is that in order for there to be knowledge that nothing continues, this knowledge itself has to be continued to exist, and this makes this very knowledge a lie. Knowledge assumes something brought forward or kept from the past knowledge is here continues or it is not really knowledge. What is there in PJ's nothing that can know for more then an instant? What is there that can be known if nothing continues? There is much here that is extra, not needed. There does not need to be this knowledge carried, nor this knower constructed. Even here where the bull has jumped through the window..there is still that darn tail...a tell tale tail. " And yet, if there is the slightest discrepancy, the Way is as distant as heaven from earth. If the least like or dislike arises, the Mind is lost in confusion." Even the slightest is too much here according to Dogen. Even the least is too much. So any bit at all is too much extra.
