The erroneous concept of separate self stems from
ignorance (avidya). Ignorance is beginningless, and as
such, has no reason for arising. If ignorance had a
beginning, we could identify the factor that came
before ignorance as being its reason d'etre, and than
that factor would be the primary link in the chain of
dependent origination (pratitya samutpada).
However, there isn't anything that's preceding
ignorance (neither in time, nor conceptually).

No, one is actually working towards correcting the
error. The act of correcting the error is called
shunyata.
Once the error gets corrected, any notion of ego, of
separate personhood and self simply evaporates, as if
it never ever was even noticeable.

Hui-neng, the Sixth Patriarch, said: "Ultimate
realization has to do with correctly aligning one's
mind. It has nothing to do with sitting."

If you muster the courage and get rid of the shop,
that will not mean that you've gotten rid of the
attachments. The ego will quickly find something else
to latch on to. The ego is ingenious that way, in that
it always quickly finds its comfort zones (even in the
most disastrous circumstances).
What you need to do is get rid of the ego, not of the
things it attaches to. Cure the cause, not the
symptoms.
