No, the VMWare comes with rpath linux etc... The problem is I see a whole lot of posts about issues with the appliance ranging from the filesystem being too small for real use to the near impossibility of upgrades, not to mention that rpath is just really not well known, certainly not like their supported EL5 based distros etc.

So, even if you get the appliance working, for most production use you'll either have to:
a) convert disk/image to larger filesystem and move to ESX/Infrastructure 3
a1) understand how to do the above + have and use expensive VMWare systems b) install on a supported distro on bare metal, in which case it's unlikely what you may have learned about rpath will directly apply. The issues I've seen reported on the lists are very different between rpath VMware appliance and say, an EL5 system.

For cost effectiveness, I generally recommend grabbing CENTOS5, doing the (pretty simple) install on a spare system, learning a little about RPMs and how to install them on EL5 and go from there.

Zenoss is at heart a Linux application, and trying to operate it as a black box VM on windows is just going to cause random pain IMO.

That worked as easily as pretty much anything for me.

I think he's using the vmware appliance version, i.e., he doesn't have a Centos5 to
install on. Unless that's how the vmware versions work? I had the impression they were
pre-prepared "images" that you just installed and ran. Now I'm curious
(because I'd actually considered the appliance route myself, but liked getting my hands
in the source code and source code installation).
