I'm going to agree the best approach may be to find a spare box, get centos5
(that's what I have, guess I was lucky to have the box at my desk already,
ready to go!), and do either a source install (that's what I did), or the rpm
install. Either way lets you learn a lot about linux, and a lot about the
install, and obviates the need to fuss and fight with the underlying potential
problems and causes therein.

So, if you can find a spare box... :-) Heck, you've got a nice XP box, why
not use that! :-0 ... I'm only half kidding, you could grab the Centos5
installs disks (download and create if necessary), and use it to re-size your
XP, and set up a dual boot. Of course this is not for the faint hearted, so
don't go off and do this without checking with your personal physician first.
:-)

I'm inclined to agree there's something not quite right with the vmware
installation. Is it possible to specify the partition size when it gets
installed if in fact people are running into file partitions being too small?

(some of these questions I'm asking to backfill some of the questions I'm sure
I'm going to encounter down the road as I get more involved working with this
tool.)
