There are definitely better ways that the network table could be
built. Here is a message I had posted to this forum with an
acceptable response from cluther:

That is definitely one way of handling this for the time being. This
is definitely a pervasive issue that needs to be solved in a better
way. I have created a ticket to make sure that it isn't forgotten about.
