if you want to do a comparison of some current value with some past value you can use rrdfetch http://oss.oetiker.ch/rrdtool/doc/rrdfetch.en.html to ferret the value out of the rrd. I used to use fetch to compare circuit current from the value on the previous day to tell me if there was a significant change in the circuit from day to day. If you use a period of time instead of a single value you will get more consistent results. You can even get fancy by getting the last several points and calculating the slope to see if its rising or falling at an unacceptable rate. Newer versions of rrdtool also have trending and forecasting functions built in, so if your so inclined, you could use rrdtool to do all the heavy lifting (not for the faint of heart) http://cricket.sourceforge.net/aberrant/rrd_hw.htm
