Just to add...

That is most likely normal behaviour for acknowledged events, it most likely
does this on purpose so that if someone acknowledged a device down event,
brings the device back up, but leave the event sitting there as acknowledged by
accident, and the device goes down in the middle of the night, another alerts
gets triggered to notify people.

To clear an event to history you put a checkmark next to the event in the event
console, then from the dropdown menu (icon with a downward arrow) you select
"Move to History..." which effectively "clears" the event.

Looking at past events is extremely simple, go to the event console, and click
the "View Event History..." link in the top right. You can then select the
start and end date as well as filter by text. The same thing can be done on
the Events tab of any device page to view just events for that device.

Zenoss can indeed send emails based on conditions. Go to Settings and setup
the SMTP settings (hostname, port, username, password). Then go to Settings ->
Users, select your username, go to the Alerting Rules tab, create an alert.
Once the alert is created click on it to go to the options. You will notice at
the bottom that there are filters specified by default (Production State =
Production, for example). You can either leave, modify or remove the default
filters (by clicking the "-" button next to a filter line). You can also add
new filters from the filters dropdown.

Once again, all of these things are covered in detail in the Zenoss Admin
Guide. If you take the time and really read it in detail from top to bottom it
will be an excellent start for you.
