Not picking on zope, but if that's what's happening it has to be
called a bug.
Wrong. It is not writing into thin air. It probably still holds a
file descriptor. The fact that the file the descriptor is pointing to
is not visible because someone messed with it cannot be detected by
the ZODB code. There is no bug here.
