Since the discussion over the past few days has shown that the V: field is
one of those proposed extensions that are interpreted very differently by
different people, that would be a really useful exercise John. 

We could then look at what is happening in the wild, and perhaps
formulate a specification definition of the V: field (which may well turn out
to be Jean-Francois's proposed definition) from that - further extensions to
the V: syntax (along with abolishing the header/body distinction, converting
to XML, etc !!) could then be argued over separately. 

I'm certainly aware from queries I've had from tutorial users that the V: field
*per se* is one whose time has come - but as I've said before in this
thread, let's not over-egg the pudding ....
