Paul,

mplayer -vo xv file.mpg plays very well, but pins the CPU. There are
some complaints in the output about having too slow a CPU and
something about the audio, but it plays quite well.

mplayer -vo xvmc file.mpg plays for about a third of a second and
aborts. The error complains about a video filter and even recommends
adding a video filter at the end of the -vf switch, but when I put -vf
in mplayer says that it is not a valid option.

I'm not sure what else to try.
