I haven't been feeling much love on this forum as of late, but I'm
desperate for some help on this one. It's really killing the
experience for me. I feel like I'm so close to nirvana, its driving me
nuts!

I've run into more lockup problems on some recordings. When I try to
skip forward/backward, the frontend locks up requiring a reboot.
Here's a snippet of what I'm seeing in the front end's log:

The problem is reproducible with the same recording. Doing an mpeg2
transcode seems to fix the problem. However, I have no way of knowing
ahead of time which recordings will have this issue and which won't.
It doesn't seem to be consistent for a particular channel or program.
Transcoding everything (as I tried doing at one point), caused issues
(drops, etc) on many recordings that I don't think I would have had
with the original recording. If transcoding renders the show
unwatchable, I don't really have any recourse.

Here's some of my attempts to fix the issue based on ideas I
encountered while surfing the web:

1. Using nvidia-settings, turned off Vector Texture Adapter - Sync to
VBlank -> fail!
2. Changed processor.max_cstate to 1 in /boot/grub/menu.lst -> fail!
3. echo performance > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/
scaling_governor ->fail! Before trying to playback the video, this was
set to "performance", but after it crashed, I checked again and it was
set back to "ondemand" ???
4. Updated /boot/grib/menu.lst adding "noacpi" and
"acpi_use_timer_override" to the arguments passed to the kernel ->
fail!

Any other ideas? I've considered trying to use a more recent nvidia
driver (I'm using nvidia-glx-180 on Ubuntu 9.04) or revisiting my
attempt to transcode all recordings.

Thanks in advance,

Bruce
