Bentley says I should get 1280 ohms across pins 1 & 2 - I measure about 510
ohms. Hopefully the dealer has one in stock and doesn't want to me pay in
blood for it. I'd like to get this thing going again.

I have a 1992 525i w/ a stock deck. I'm interested in
getting my new iPod hooked up to it.

I know that the car is prewired for a CD changer. Is
there anyway to hook the iPod up to the stock deck?

I don't care so much that it charges while in use or
has the songs displayed on the deck, I'm just looking
to get a "line in"to the stock deck.

Any help is greatly apprecaited. Thank you, -Alex

Currently nobody I am aware of (P.I.E., Blitzsafe, or Soundgate) make
an auxiliary input adapter for pre '96 cars.
This leaves you with two other easy alternatives. A cassette input
adapter, which is a tape shaped device that goes where a tape would go
for input into the stock deck, it would then connect to the line out of
the ipod.
Another option is an fm modulator, which is a device that will
broadcast over a select fm frequency and you just tune the radio to
that.

Hope this helps.

Jonathan agreed with me that a rental 4x4 might be a better idea than putting
chains on a BMW.

Then Marco posted that In CA you will still need to carry chains in a 4x4.
with a link to the CA vehicle code:

http://www.dot.ca.gov/hq/roadinfo/chcontrl.htm

I've been going to Tahoe from the Bay Area every winter since I first learned
how to ski in 1969 and I lived up there the winter after I got of High School
in 1983. I have never heard of anyone with a 4x4 who was asked if they had
chains.

The CA vehicle code says:

"Requirement One (R1): Chains are required, snow tires are allowed."

This is when the CHP lets you decide if you want to put on chains. If you
consider the 20 year old Michelin XZX tires on your 2002 snow tires feel free
to drive on through...

"Requirement Two (R2): Chains are required on all vehicles except four wheel
drive vehicles
with snow tires on all four wheels. (NOTE: Four wheel drive vehicles must carry
traction devices in chain control areas)"

This is when they actually check every car to make sure it has chains or four
wheel drive. They will wave people in Land Rovers and BMW X5s on through but
will stop Audis and MBZs without chains to make sure they are Quatros or
4Matics (as I said above I have never heard of them asking guys in 4x4s if they
have chains). In reality you also don't need "snow tires" on all four wheels
and I have never heard that the CHP has ever checked for them. As much as I
love real "snow tires" almost no one in the Bay Area that drives to Tahoe has
them since they wear out so fast if you drive around on warm dry streets with
them (I found this out a few years back when I put a set of Nokian snow tires
and steel rims on my old Range Rover Classic).

"Requirement Three (R3): Chains are required on all vehicles, no exceptions."

This never really happens and in reality the roads always get closed before you
need a 4x4 with chains to get through. Every now and then the CHP will let a
4x4 with chains on all four wheels through a closed road if driver is a local
resident (with ID) trying to get home or if you have some other important
reason to get through (getting a pregnant lady to the hospital etc.) When the
roads are so bad that you need a 4x4 with chains you really don't want to be
driving around and probably shouldn't be on the road unless you really do have
to get someone to the hospital.

Kevin,

Times, they are a changing ;-)

I loaned my bro-in-law my Avalanche to go visit his mother in Reno over
Thanksgiving. Snowed like a &^&%^%. So he calls me before leaving Reno
on his way back to ask if he needs to have chains. I say "well
technically yes, but they never ask if they see you're in a 4x4."

Three hours later he calls and says "I just bought you a set of chains
for the truck. The CHP stopped me at the chain checkpoint and asked to
see my chains."

I was pretty shocked and felt kind of bad that he spent an extra hour on
the road because of the chain thing. They were letting 4x4s that had
chains past.

BTW - I just heard the CHP are going to start using LIDAR. I remember
when they never used Radar.

<sigh>

Local chain vendors wanted a "green" Christmas and filed a complaint
with the CHP about them never checking 4x4s for the mandatory chains.

Or maybe that's a conspiracy theory. You decide. :)

One of the amplifiers in the diversity antenna of my HK audio system has
gone bad, again. If I get a new head unit, will it be using this same
antenna system, so that I will still need to replace the antenna amp, or
not? If not, I'd rather just replace the head unit than spend a ridiculous
amount of money on another crummy antenna amp.
