We seem to be mixing apples and oranges.

Jonathan may well be right (as usual!).  But that does NOT address, much
less eliminate, the many powerful arguements that have been put forward for
equipping fighters with cannon.  That would only be true if a persuasive
case had been made that so equipping fighters would materially reduce the
ability to attack the enemy's planes on the ground with appropriate means.
