This probably won't help much, but I'd like to throw whatever I can into the bug
hunt:

I got on the Cc: list for this bug after I upgraded to Red Hat 9 and started
experiencing it myself: every resolution switch on my Radeon 7500 had at least a
10% chance of freezing my computer.

At some point shortly thereafter, the problem just went away, entirely, and I
haven't had a crash in the month or more since. I was using workarounds (a
different movie player, and not playing games at different resolutions often) to
avoid the crashes, so I'm not certain exactly when it was fixed or what fixed
it, but I haven't changed my kernel, XFree86 version, or drivers, so I think it
was a motherboard/CPU upgrade. The old board was a MSI K7T266 Pro2 (with a Via
KT266A chipset), the new board is a Syntax SV400 (with a Via KT400 chipset).
Whatever was going wrong must be very hardware-specific.
