Now that he has put all his fixes in one place on his website, I took the opportunity to start from a clean code base and apply all his fixes again (and remove my black-magic patches). So, I discover that I did not actually have patch#2 installed previously, and now I can successfully play sound sample before/after the current position, even in 'format C' mpg files.
