hi,  so i managed to install another version of gaim (.74-11) using 
fink update gaim.  by changing the fink.conf (adding unstable/... to 
tree: )  i also selected cvs instead of rsync, etc.  2 things: first, i 
can now successfully open gaim (yay!!) however all the text in the 
window is written in weird symbol (like a box or something) so i can't 
see anything prefs or such.  any suggestions?  second, since i changed 
my fink.conf, will fink now always automatically install the unstable 
version of everthing? or just if i use fink commmand instead of 
apt-get? thanks for all your help everyone. i've just started learning 
unix stuff

Use the unstable tree and install Gaim 0.74.
0.68 is rather old now and ALOT has been fixed/changed since then.
They try to put out a new point release every other thursday and youre 
about three months or so behind on the bugfixes.
0.68 came out 08-31-03.

I havent had it crash on my system with a bus error since version 
0.64/65  or so..
