I have created application like my ZF2 module, in pure php. It was a long time ago. Nested sets, multipanel manager, own ACL. But as a result, the whole system in php is not far behind Phalcon. I think if you need something very fast, very easy to write self. Many people does this - look zf1 code as a basis and writes a quick and easy application :) Of course, it is possible to see the code of zf2, but it's a little harder :)
