FBI arrests man selling software debug code

New Delhi, August 28

A software professional has landed himself in the FBI
net for trying to sell the debug code of a US-based
company's latest software package to a rival company.

Shekhar Verma was nabbed by the FBI sleuths in Ashok
Hotel while selling the code worth $60 million.

A city court has remanded Verma to the CBI custody.
The CBI played an active role in his arrest and is now
handling the matter.

Hyderabad-based Verma was working with Geometric
Software Solutions Limited (GSSL) in Mumbai. US
software giant Solid Works had engaged the GSSL to
debug the source code of their latest package 'Solid
Works 2001 Plus.'

Every GSSL employee working on this project had signed
a confidentiality agreement not to disclose, sell,
transfer, or assign any information on the project.

After working for two years on the project, Verma
resigned his job in June 2002, but took away a copy of
the source code with him.

He then tried to sell this code to various US-based
software companies posing as 'Richard Waterman'.
Another US company, Solid Concepts, responded to
Verma’s solicitation, but they also alerted Solid
Works that their code was up for sale on the Internet.
The FBI was also informed, and a trap was laid.

Oblivious of the fact that the FBI sleuths were hot on
his tracks, Verma struck a deal with a representative
of M/s Solid Concepts to hand over the codes for a sum
of $2,00,000.

Advance payment of $20,000 was wired to his account at
the ICICI bank in Mumbai.

Verma was to hand over the compact discs (CDs)
containing the source code to the US company's
representative at Ashok Hotel’s room number 1505 on
August 25. The CBI team made audio and video tapes of
the dealings that took place in the hotel room and
arrested Verma.
