Yes, This may explain the this belief. I usually make a row of point ground stitches before pinning, but I usually restrict them to 3 stitches at a time. I have tried longer rows but I am not happy with the final tension. Even so, we still use and need the pinholes and it does not explain the prickings without the ground pricked.
