Thanks for the link!

I'm starting to chicken out on this, though it still sounds like it would
be fun. If I could get an ethernet adapter for this computer, it might
actually be of some (limited) use to me. But I don't think that I can.
The biggest problem I forsee is that I have no CD drive for the computer,
only a floppy. The FAQ says that no mac floppy drives are supported yet,
so it kinda sounds hopeless since the *only* input method would be the
keyboard. I can just see myself typing in new software in binhex format!
There's at least some hope of using the serial port, and I could presumably
drag over software & data within MacOS.

Anyway, sounds like it's going to be a tough battle with little reward.

Subject: FM56-ITU/2 modem setup question
Date: 16 May 2001 13:19:13 -0400

I recently installed an AOpen FM56-ITU/2 hardware modem to use with my
Redhat 6.1 setup. I have it configured to COM 3, IRQ 11 on the board
(jumpers) with translates to ttyS2 inh Linux. I tested it with Minicom
and it initializes the modem and dials out fine, although it seems to take
several seconds for the dial tone to sound before dialing out.

Next, I used the modemtool to configure the modem and the netcfg utility
to set up a PPP conection. Still using ttyS2, it fails to initialize the
modem when I attempt to activate the PPP connection.

any ideas why the modem works in minicom, but not in PPP? the AT commands
to initialize the modem are the same, so it has to be something else.

TIA Chris

Our $12,000 quad Xeon handily beats a $25,000 Alpha machine at database
work. The Compaq rep that loaned us the Alpha for a week was pretty sad

The key is getting an OHCI (open host controller interface) compliant
board, which is what the 2.4.x kernel supports.

Good luck,

The ftape driver is irrelevant for the Wangtek 5150 series, as
that's not a floppy streamer at all.

This is a QIC02 streamer, and you'll have to compile the needed driver
for the card and the QIC02 device into the kernel. Note that for
to be able to use that streamer/card combo, you'll either have to
find the qic02 tools to setup the card from out of Linux, or
you must edit the corresponding tpqic02.h file (IIRC) manually
prior to compiling the driver, otherwise you'll not be able to
communicate with that card at all.

QIC02 cards are a bit similar to SCSI-1 cards, but use a completely
different protocol.

idea where this structure is usually defined, and how I could try to fix the

Thanks

Subject: INFO: IBM xSeries 200 problem fix
Date: Wed, 16 May 2001 19:29:36 GMT

After spending the last week or so trying to narrow down problems with
both RedHat 7.0 and RedHat 7.1 on an IBM xSeries 200 machine, I have been
able to reproduce and eventually fix the problems I was having. Given that
there are probably a lot of people with the same problem, I decided to post
the results. First the hardware:

IBM xSeries 200, w/256MB RAM, onboard Intel PRO100 ethernet (*)
IBM ServeRAID 4L Ultra LVD SCSI
Adaptec 7892 Ultra LVD SCSI (for tape drive)
3*36GB IBM hard drives.

* The stock Intel PRO/100 driver on Linux is crap. Remember that.

Lucky for me I actually had TWO identically configured boxes to use. I
updated BIOS on the board, firmware on the ServeRAID adaptor and even the
firmware on the SCSI drives with IBM's SCSI Disk Updator program.
Everything was at the latest and greatest revisions for me to use Linux on.

Now the problem:

Periodic box lockups when using the SCSI and/or ethernet:

(eth0): Adaptor reports no resources
(ips): Resetting controller

RAID becomes unsynced, resulting in corrupt data and eventual crash of the
box. The box stops responding to pings and all services, including the
dinky keyboard light on CAPS lock. All indications to me of a motherboard
failure or serious interrupt problem. Not only was this problem on RedHat
7.0 (2.2.x kernel) but on RedHat 7.1 (2.4.x kernel). Some Google searches
turned up a lot of people reporting this type of problem on their Netfinity
systems, so I took some advice. Suggested fixes (which did not fix the
problem BTW) were:

* Use "nosmp" at bootup
* Use "noapic" at bootup
* Use "nmi_watchdog=0" at bootup

None of these worked by the way, but I still have all three in my LILO conf
file (append="nosmp noapi nmi_watchdog=0"). What the heck.

THE FIX:

Replaced the Intel PRO/100 ethernet driver with the one off Intel's website:

ftp://download.intel.com/df-support/2663/eng/e100-1.6.5.tar.gz

After I compiled and installed this new driver, making the changes to
/etc/modules.conf to replace the text "eepro100" listing with "e100", the
box was rebooted and has been working fine (under load) ever since.
