I am doing it every time I upgrade my kernel and so far I had not encounter any serious problems. In addition, if you want to compile cutting-edge usb-storage compatible with stock Red Hat (or some other distro) see here: http://www.fuw.edu.pl/~pliszka/hints/redhat-module.html for sample Makefile.
