I have reservations about cmake, but I would have some against autotools if I was not used to it already. All I ask from cmake is that it does the right think (i.e. what we advise people to do) by default (both for release and developer versions) without having to use variables in capital letters that hurt my fingers.
For the rest, I trust that the problems will vanish with time. JMarc
