it is you who criticised RH's compiler version decision ! :)

yes, it generally works ok if you have the latest packages. One trick
with older C++ programs is to build C++ packages like :

CC=kgcc CXX=kgcc CXXFLAGS=-L/usr/lib

You can look at the spec file in the src.rpm of the kde* stuff to see how its
done.
