Thanks for the response.

Yes, the new code went out with S10u3 -- the December 2006 release
entitled 11/06. ;-}
Actually, the extensions are *far* older than that. They're
compatible with the extensions present in Trusted Solaris 8 and
previous releases. My time machine is on the fritz right now, but
otherwise I'd volunteer to go back and help change that release.
Would you let me know when you get it working again? There are a few
other things I'd love to go back and fix... :-) And not all of them in
Solaris. :-)
If they have _not_ escaped into Solaris 10, then can I suggest that
Joerg, who's obviously an expert in these details, and who seems to care
passionately about it, figure out how to reimplement the features to be
more compliant with POSIX 2001.1? He can send diffs to the tar folks,
In the spirit of a review, no such code diffs or design figuring would
really have needed to have been done. Instead, noting the difference
between the two standards and asking the project team (during ARC or
design review) to consider the newer standard would have been fair.
Right. But I was trying to look forward rather than backwards. But its
moot, since the changes are now in the field. Sorry, Joerg, guess
you'll have to update star if you want to remain compatible.
(Getting star into Solaris might help protect you against this in the
future though.. since then one could reasonably pressure the project
team to make sure that it was updated as well... :-)
I can't predict exactly how that alternate reality would have played
out, but I strongly suspect the answer would have been, "thanks, but
we have TS8 customers who need to upgrade to TX in S10, and tar
compatibility is a key part of that story."
For the case of PSARC, if there is not a PSARC case for these
extensions, then can a PSARC representative kindly slap the project team
that integrated these features on the wrist? Changes that are customer
No slap needed, as best I can tell. It's in PSARC 2005/723.
Thanks! Too bad it appears that this case was closed. It looks like
the inception and final commitment were held in 2006, so it *could* have
been open. In that regard, I guess Joerg has a valid complaint.
Hopefully we're doing better these days about allowing for community
involvement.
