It's somewhat spoiled for me by the fact that the shadow of the plane on the ice is rather obviously a B-17. The B-52 is actually a model shot in front of a projected background. On the other hand, I find the sequence of nuclear explosions at the end of the film one of the most stunning things I've seen; if you don't think about what you are looking at, the visuals are eerily beautiful.
