[12] Times on United matters - Diarra, sponsor, Gary Nev

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,27-2119268,00.html

'AT THE end of what could prove a significant 24 hours for the club, Manchester
United were close to securing a British record sponsorship deal last night with
American Investment Group (AIG), while Sir Alex Ferguson was in Milan after
stepping up his interest in Mahamadou Diarra, the Lyons midfield player who
could prove to be the “new Roy Keane”.
Along with Javier Mascherano, of Corinthians, Diarra has been identified by
Ferguson as the leading candidate to fill the void left in the United midfield
by Keane’s departure. The 24-year-old, who plays for Mali, has also attracted
interest from Real Madrid and, more tentatively, Chelsea, but Ferguson hoped to
steal a march on United’s rivals by watching Diarra play against AC Milan in
last night’s Champions League quarter-final, second leg.

He will have been impressed with Diarra’s persistence in heading in the goal
that, for almost an hour, looked like sending Lyons into the semi-finals. But
Milan scored twice in the last three minutes to secure a 3-1 aggregate win.

It is unlikely to have escaped Ferguson’s notice that Diarra’s agent, Frédéric
Guerra, was also in Milan to watch the match, but whether or not their paths
crossed, the main object of the exercise was to find out if, as members of the
United scouting team have suggested, the player seems to have what it takes to
succeed at Old Trafford.

Guerra recently described Diarra as “the best defensive midfielder in Europe”.
Unfortunately for United, he will not come cheap, having been valued in excess
of £20 million by Lyons.

Ferguson also plans to take the opportunity to travel to Brazil to watch
Mascherano play for Corinthians in the coming weeks, illustrating his
commitment to finding the right man to fill Keane’s boots. Still two months
short of his 22nd birthday, Mascherano would represent the less experienced of
the two options, particularly in terms of European football, but Ferguson is
enthused by the prospect of signing the young Argentinian, whom Chelsea have
long believed they are in pole position to land after this summer’s World Cup
finals.

In terms of competing with Chelsea in the transfer market, even the biggest
sponsorship deal is dwarfed by the vast wealth of Roman Abramovich, but
United’s impending agreement with AIG — which seems to have fought off
competition from Mansion, Etihad Airways, Qatar Airways and LG Electronics —
will easily surpass the £10 million-a-year British record deal that Chelsea
signed with Samsung last year.

Whether it is also a world record remains to be seen, with sources in Italy
claiming that Juventus are receiving €240 million (about £167.5 million) over
the course of a ten-year contract with Tamoil, but United’s deal with AIG is
certain to be close to the one they had previously agreed with Mansion, the
gambling and casino company, which claimed to have agreed to pay “£60 million
to £65 million over four years”.

Mansion remains angry with United over the decision to look elsewhere, but the
club believe that AIG, the New York-based insurance giant is a more suitable
company to succeed Vodafone, which terminated its £9 million-a-year contract in
November. United officials, having felt compelled to issued a statement on
Monday in response to some angry comments from Mansion, remained silent
yesterday. AIG was similarly non-committal, with its public relations manager,
Peter Tulupman, saying simply that “we don’t comment on rumours and
speculation”, but a deal is expected to be announced in the coming days.

Gary Neville has enlisted the help of Graham Bean, the FA’s former compliance
officer, in an attempt to escape a £5,000 fine for improper conduct as a result
of the overzealous manner in which he celebrated United’s winning goal against
Liverpool in January.'

[11] Nice work if you can get it

from Telegraph

'David Richards, the chairman of the Premier League, could face awkward
questions today from the Football Association board over allegations he covered
up irregular payments made by his former club, Sheffield Wednesday.

The former Wednesday chairman, who is now an FA vice-chairman, has been accused
of failing to disclose to them £1.25 million of unofficial payments amid fears
the club would be deducted points or face relegation.

The payments are alleged to have been made before Richards became chairman of
the club in 1990. It has also been reported that it was Richards who reported
the payments to the Inland Revenue after they were uncovered in an audit by
accountants Arthur Andersen.

The discovery led to Sheffield Wednesday making a £1 million payment to the
Inland Revenue, who were carrying out investigations into illicit benefits and
bonuses paid to players.

Although Richards insists the matter was dealt with "in a proper manner", some
members of the FA board want to know whether he deliberately failed to tell the
FA for fear of being punished.

In 1990, Swindon were fined and demoted from the old First Division after being
found guilty of making illegal payments to players totalling £124,000 over five
years.

Some members of the FA board are treating the allegations extremely seriously
and want the FA's compliance unit to open an investigation into the affair.

At least one director is intending to raise the subject at today's meeting,
believing the controversy undermines the Premier League's call for their clubs
to be open with the "bung" inquiry being carried out by Lord Stevens.'

[9] MEN on Busby Babes
---------------------------------
Posted Wednesday, April 5, 2006 by ed:

http://www.manchesteronline.co.uk/men/sport/football/s/209/209887_birth_of_the_babes.html

http://www.manchesteronline.co.uk/men/sport/football/s/209/209887_birth_of_the_babes.html

'AT United's 1952 AGM, Matt Busby faced criticism over the demise of his ageing
champions. His response was to point to £200,000-worth of burgeoning talent in
the Old Trafford reserves and youth team who were the future of the club.
To the cynics this was a smokescreen. But a new era was on the horizon and
Busby was going to shake the soccer world with his blueprint.

The manager's hope was that the inaugural FA Youth Cup competition would leave
those sceptics in no doubt that clearing the decks of the old guard to herald a
new age of young world beaters was the correct way ahead for United.

Advertisement your story continues below
Those who scoffed at Busby's vision at that tetchy Old Trafford meeting were
beginning to regret voicing their doubts when a 21,000 home crowd watched
United's kids demolish Wolves 7-1 in the first leg of the inaugural two-legged
FA Youth Cup Final in 1953.

Wolves were no mean operators in the recruitment of fresh-faced talent
themselves. The Midlanders were one of England's most powerful forces in that
decade and were active in the youth market.

So when Busby's youngsters then went to Molineux and drew 2-2 to win the trophy
the country began to wake up to the fact something special was stirring in
Stretford.

Plan

Disgruntled United fans who'd seen the '52 title side broken up almost
overnight, began to buy into Busby's revolutionary plan.

They hoovered up the youth cup in '54 and '55 despite the fact that a stream of
teenagers still eligible for that tournament were now also engaged in pitting
their talent against seasoned pros in the League.

Manchester was alive with anticipation as the exuberance and excitement of the
Babes captured the imagination.

Even so come the start of the 1955-56 league campaign there was still a
majority of experts nationwide who held the 1950's version of Alan Hansen's
infamous 1996 opinion that you won nothing with kids.

Despite the gradual introduction to senior level of the likes of Duncan
Edwards, Bill Foulkes, Tommy Taylor, Dennis Viollet, David Pegg, Jackie
Blanchflower, Eddie Colman and Jeff Whitefoot, and the rave reviews they were
earning, there was still an amount of scepticism.

But brilliantly guided by Roger Byrne, one of only two '52 title-winner to
survive Busby's cull, the swashbuckling youngsters ate away at the big names in
1955-56 and suddenly everyone began to realise that Busby was on to something
with his pioneering strategy.

Destined

And for those in the '90s who thought Alex Ferguson's dismantling of the '94
Dream Team was ruthless consider the fact that Busby sold his son-in-law and
regular Don Gibson to Sheffield Wednesday in the summer of '56 to make even
more room for his Babes!

The United youngsters knew they were destined for something big.

"As far as we were concerned there was never any danger of how good that group
were going to be," said Mancunian John Doherty who broke through the season
after Johnny Carey's side won the championship in '52.

"There were a lot of very, very good players. The place was awash with talent.
It was superb.

"We always knew we'd make the breakthrough because it would have been
impossible to hold back the special talent that had been nurtured.

"I remember beating Nantwich Town 23-0 in only our second Youth Cup match in
1952. We were winning 10-0 at half-time and Jimmy Murphy was berating me for
not scoring!

"I couldn't believe it so I went out in the second half and got the next five!
But Jimmy's displeasure showed just what the club thought about the Youth Cup
and what it meant and the professionalism that was running throughout the club.

"With the array of talent Matt and Jimmy had collected over those years I am
firmly convinced that, if we hadn't had the Munich disaster, then United would
have won another five or six titles in close succession. They'd have also
challenged Real Madrid's supremacy in the European Cup."

Famous

In 1955-56 Wolves, who'd been beating the cream of Europe like Honved, Real
Madrid and Moscow clubs Spartak and Dynamo in famous floodlit friendlies shown
on snowy TV sets throughout England, were one of the big attractions.

When the Reds beat Stan Cullis's side 4-3 at Old Trafford in October in one of
the matches of the campaign it served notice that the championship pendulum was
about to swing north.

Champions Chelsea were dispatched 3-0 at Old Trafford and 4-2 at Stamford
Bridge to set the Reds kids on the way to the trophy.

And on April 7 the Babes beat Blackpool 2-1 to complete the transformation to a
vibrant young side with the world at their feet.

Busby's vision, however, wasn't restricted to youth and the domination of these
shores. His far-seeking and ground-breaking plans spread wider and pitched him
into conflict with the Football League.

His insistence on taking the Reds into the exciting European adventure was to
bring the club many memorable evenings but also their most tragic and darkest
hour.'

'Only £5 has been staked on Chelsea to win the Premiership since Ladbrokes
reopened it's book, the firm revealed on Tuesday. Punters have rushed to back
Manchester United to overhaul Chelsea's seven point gap at the top of the
table. And the Red Devils, who are 7/1 to lift the trophy, have seen their
support approach five figures.

Ladbrokes spokesman, Nick Weinberg, said: "As far as we're concerned the title
race was over a long time ago. But we were inundated with punters over the
course of the weekend looking to back Sir Alex's boys, so we reopened the book
on Sunday.

"It'll be a case of double trouble if we have to reach for our wallets again as
we paid out Chelsea on Valentine's Day. We'd love the Blues to put the issue to
rest sooner rather than later."

Sir Alex Ferguson's side have overhauled seemingly insurmountable leads in the
past. They overcame Newcastle's 12 point advantage in the 1995/96 season. The
Reds emerged from a similar position in the 2002/03 campaign to overtake
Arsenal.

Ladbrokes paid out over £500,000 to Chelsea's backers in February.'

[5] United thrash Siddy reserves - Campbell gets 4

'FA Premier Reserve League North
Ewen Fields, 4 April, 2006

Manchester United 6
Campbell (3, 21, 38 & 65,), Rossi (10), Neumayr (49)

Manchester City 0

United gave themselves a great chance of becoming the first club to retain the
FAPRL title with a thumping win over local rivals Manchester City.

Four goals from Fraizer Campbell and further strikes from Giuseppe Rossi and
Markus Neumayr buried Steve Wigley's side and kept United six points ahead of
nearest title challengers Aston Villa.

Aside from the return of Jonny Evans, boss Rene Meulensteen named an unchanged
line-up from that which started last week's 2-0 win at West Brom.

That victory over the midlanders was United's first in five games, and the
subsequent confidence boost was evident immediately.

Red shirts swarmed around their blue counterparts and were first to every ball,
and they moved ahead just after the two minute mark.

Markus Neumayr pinged an excellent pass over the top of the City defence, and
Campbell raced clear before slotting the ball past experienced Blues keeper
Nicky Weaver.

Campbell came close to doubling his tally with a glancing header five minutes
later, but United did have their second after just 10 minutes.

As has so often been the case this season, it came from the combination of
Neumayr and Giuseppe Rossi as the Italian reacted first to the German's
near-post corner to prod in.

With the visitors stunned by their hosts' lightning start United continued to
pour forward, and Campbell grabbed a superb second 11 minutes later.

Darron Gibson's high long ball gave Campbell plenty to do, but the pacy forward
bypassed City defender Shaleum Logan with a clever lob.

Despite a clear run on goal, Campbell opted to shoot first time and his
stunning left-footed effort thundered past Weaver and in off the near post from
20 yards.

Seven minutes before the interval, Campbell completed his hat-trick, slotting
past Weaver again after another through-ball from Rossi.

Although the points were safely in the bag, there was no let-up from United
after the interval.

Superb one-touch passing from Danny Rose and Giuseppe Rossi put Neumayr through
on the right side of the area, and the German fired emphatically home.

Not content with his hat-trick Campbell added a fourth, lobbing Weaver
beautifully after another incisive through-ball from Rossi.

It capped a scintillating performance from United, easily their best 90 minutes
of the season, and gave them an additional goal difference boost.

To a man, it was a faultless United performance laced with courage, skill and
commitment. It was, in short, a display of champions.

United: Steele, Marsh (Gray, 73), Rose, Piqué, J Evans (Shawcross, 58), Gibson,
R Jones, Neumayr, Campbell (Barnes, 78), Rossi, Mullan.

"United are stringing wins together and they are making a fight of it. You
would expect that from a great club with a great boss in Alex Ferguson. He
has got his team playing well and with the likes of Wayne Rooney, Louis Saha,
Ronaldo and Ryan Giggs they have some wonderful players. They are gelling as a
team and they are putting the pressure on us. But that's great - it's what we
need. It can only bring the best out of us. We are not looking over our
shoulders. We know we need four wins to win the league whatever Manchester
United do so we just focus on that. We just go out there and try to win games.
Some people don't like the way we play but we are playing the way we have
always played in the last two years. I don't think the players take much notice
of anything like that. They
just want to play football and the boss wouldn't have it any other way. The
main thing for me is to concentrate on winning the Premier League and the FA
Cup. Anything else on top of that would be marvellous but the main thing is
winning those two trophies. I have got no doubts United are going to push us
all the way. We are lucky enough that we have got it in our hands to win the
title. It all depends on our own results so that has got to stay the focus."

Posted Wednesday, April 5, 2006 by ed:
Isn’t it amazing just what a little bit of concentration, determination and
application can achieve?

Unlike the latter part of last season when too many of our players decided to
just go through the motions (particularly Silvestre who subsequently confessed
that it was difficult to focus with nothing to play for - although if my memory
serves me well there was the small matter of an FA Cup Final to consider) this
season the players have been given a target, a goal.

They were set the task of finishing second in order to gain automatic
qualification for next season’s Champions League and they have responded
positively, and admirably, to the task in hand. It has certainly helped that a
challenge from the hated foe from Liverpool needed to be overcome in order to
succeed but, by grasping the nettle, lo and behold, another ship has appeared
on the horizon and it seems to have run into a little bit of engine trouble.

All of a sudden there is a fresh target on the agenda, bringing renewed hope
and optimistic cries from our crew of “Bloody Hell we can win this!”

It might yet prove a bridge too far – the odds are that it will – but having
left Cardiff in February believing that our season was now over, to begin the
month of April with even the merest glimmer of light is a totally unexpected
bonus. We have always had the capability and ability to mount a challenge, of
course, but perhaps it’s needed one or two of the “bigger” players – no names
mentioned – having their arses kicked to knock it into some shape. It also
helps, of course, having some pace (Giggs, Saha, Rooney and Ronaldo) in the
team and using it to good effect.

Best Wishes Martin

"I'm always chomping at the bit to play. That desire never leaves and I share
that feeling with a few of the lads who haven't played as many games as they
would have liked this season. I'll just continue to work hard and be patient. I
know my opportunity will come sooner or later and I need to be ready for that."

[27] BBC on Jamie Turner

'The wife of a football fan left brain damaged following a brutal attack has
called for quicker treatment for him.
Jamie Turner, 45, from Telford, Shrops, was in a coma after a fight between
fans in Southampton.

The Manchester United fan has improved since the attack last May but needs an
operation to repair his skull.

His wife Karen said his operation should be given priority. But experts said it
could take six months and the risk to his health was "minimal".

Mr Turner has part of his skull missing and has to sleep a certain way in bed.

It is a very strange person we live with now
Karen Turner

His wife said the brain damage he has suffered has made life more difficult for
the family.

"Sometimes, when we go out I have to drive, he will just get out of the car and
walk off up the street.

"It is a very strange person we live with now."

The couple's daughter Kirstie, 14, said: "It is like I have got a new dad from
the one I had before.

"It is not the same. It is difficult to cope with."

'No clear guidelines'

Mr Turner said it was not acceptable for him to have to walk around with part
of his skull missing.

A statement from Telford and Wrekin Primary Care Trust, which is responsible
for Mr Turner's treatment, said: "Patients are assessed for speed of treatment
based upon the clinical urgency as assessed by the treating consultant.

"Advice recently received from a neurosurgeon in Southampton indicates that the
ideal time to undertake the operation is within three to six months of the
original surgery but there are no clear guidelines available.

"In the meantime he advises that the risk to Mr Turner coming to any harm
whilst waiting for his operation is considered to be minimal."

[26] Daily Mail on Ruud

Posted Tuesday, April 4, 2006 by ed:
'Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy has his sights set on a move to
Spain if he decides to quit Old Trafford.

The Holland forward has told friends at United that he is unsure about his
prospects in the wake of Louis Saha taking his place in Sir Alex Ferguson's
team.
Although Van Nistelrooy is aware that Spain's big two clubs, Barcelona and Real
Madrid, are no longer interested in him, he believes that he may be offered
contracts by Villarreal and Valencia if he decides to quit Manchester.

Van Nistelrooy has two years left on his deal at United, who are considering
extending the offer as Ferguson looks to keep hold of his pool of striking
talent.

But Van Nistelrooy is not sure whether to commit himself to a club where he no
longer appears to be first choice. Suggestions that the 29-year-old may not be
content at United were not helped by Van Nistelrooy himself in an interview
with the club's inhouse TV station MUTV following his winning goal in the 2-1
success at Bolton on Saturday. When it was put to him that 'there will be many
more goals and many more years', Van Nistelrooy merely smiled awkwardly and
walked away. MUTV -- the station that was barred from showing a controversial
Roy Keane interview last October -- edited the clip from the footage when it
was re-run yesterday afternoon. However, the moment had reappeared on the
station's 6pm news bulletin. '

'Sir Alex Ferguson has more connections than King's Cross and, if his
Manchester United side really are going to do the impossible and reel in
Chelsea, now is the time for all members of the Ferguson fan club to come to
the aid of the party.
After 20 years immersed in the English game, duelling and golfing with other
managers, wooing and selling footballers, Ferguson boasts a managerial acolyte
or former player in most Premiership dressing-rooms.
Sometimes it feels like there are two Fergusons, so regularly is the
non-sleeping, life-loving Scot spotted at all manner of games, charity bashes
and football functions. His contacts book is a Who's Who of the modern game.
Just as Ferguson has eyes and ears all over the Manchester area, feeding him
information if any of his players stray, so he has hearts and minds across the
footballing landscape supporting him.
Criticise Ferguson in public, and managers to whom he loans players or offers
advice will call to berate an impertinent upstart.
Chelsea are not being chased by a team, but a movement. Calling all believers,
Ferguson needs you.
Last Saturday it was Steve Bruce, Ferguson's old warhorse of a centre-half,
doing him a favour by holding Chelsea at Birmingham City. Next Sunday it is
Teddy Sheringham's turn.
Others in Claret and Blue have associations with Ferguson. Matthew Etherington,
during his Posh pomp, was invited for a fortnight's trial at Old Trafford by
Ferguson. Anton Ferdinand would love to help out brother Rio. Chelsea must
negotiate a web of old alliances and blood-lines.
After that, Chelsea travel to Bolton Wanderers on April 15, home of Big Sam
Allardyce, who three years ago famously spent a day golfing with Ferguson and
then unleashed his team so stirringly against Arsenal that Arsene Wenger's side
faltered and United moved closer to the Premiership.
On April 17, Everton and more Friends of Fergie loom on the horizon for
Chelsea. Giving the team-talk will be David Moyes, whose admiration for his
compatriot runs deep.
Snapping into tackles will be Phil Neville, who may resent his departure from
Old Trafford, but still respects Ferguson. Phil will doubtless receive a lively
text or three from brother Gary. Running at Chelsea will be Simon Davies, who
joined Etherington on that trial.
Assuming the race remains alive, Chelsea finish the season with two fascinating
away games, starting with Blackburn Rovers on May 2 when Mark Hughes, for all
his recent differences with Ferguson, could help out a manager he once served
so well. In midfield, Rovers also have Robbie Savage, nurtured (and released)
by Ferguson.
And then comes the really astonishing twist in the tale. St James' on May 7
marks the final moment in the fine career of Alan Shearer, a forward who twice
rebuffed Ferguson and yet, conceivably, could win the championship for
Manchester United.
It surely cannot happen. All Chelsea need is for Mourinho to show some calm,
for John Terry to remind the team of the howls of laughter that will accompany
any slip-up by the Billionaire's Club, and for Didier Drogba to focus on
hitting the net, not the deck.'
