I wonder if LilyPond can handle repeats that don't line up, or if this ever 
really occurs in the literature.  I told Niek his MusicXML export should just 
abort if it encountered a repeat scenario it couldn't handle, and that has me 
wondering if LilyPond export might not want to do the same thing.

There could be some shared code in here somewhere to look at the structure of 
the composition and ensure the repeats are sane, and both exporters could make 
use of it.

The thing I don't like about that idea is it almost suggests that we want to 
make repeating be some kind of global thing, like tempo, and that's just a 
bigger can of worms than I want to open today.  It's easier to let it all go, 
and just more or less ignore the issue.
